Curtin University Medicine: 2027 Entry Guide

Curtin University offers the only direct-entry Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in Western Australia, a five-year, full-time program focused on producing generalist doctors equipped for primary care, leadership, and interprofessional teamwork, with a strong emphasis on addressing WA's healthcare workforce needs.
Course Structure
- Year 1: Introduction to problem-based learning and structured community engagement.
- Years 2–3: Intensive study of body structure and function in health and disease, continued problem-based learning, and exposure to varied healthcare settings.
- Year 4: Transition from campus-based learning to clinical settings, including outer-metropolitan, rural, and regional placements.
- Year 5: Full integration into clinical teams across a range of settings, preparing students for internship.
Clinical placements are available across a wide range of WA hospitals and general practice clinics, including Royal Perth Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital, and rural medical settings.
Entry Requirements
- Minimum ATAR of 95 (or equivalent), noted as a guide only and subject to change each year.
- Chemistry prerequisite, satisfied via Chemistry ATAR (scaled score 50+), IB Chemistry (HL/SL, Grade 4+), NCEA Level 3 Chemistry (24+ Achieved Credit Points), or two first-year university Chemistry units at Distinction-equivalent level.
- Mathematics and Human Biology/Biology are desirable but not required.
- STAT is not accepted (except for English competency).
- All applicants (except Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants) must sit both UCAT ANZ and the CASPer Test.
Non-school leaver (graduate) applicants need a minimum notional ATAR of 92, calculated from their completed qualification (a Distinction average for a bachelor's degree, Credit average for a graduate/postgraduate diploma, or a completed Master's/Doctorate).
Curtin course switchers need a minimum Course Weighted Average of 80, and must have completed (or be on track to complete) at least 200 credits, with at least 200 credits remaining.
Special Entry Pathways
Rural Entry Pathway — up to 25% of places, for WA, NT, and SA applicants with at least 10 cumulative or 5 consecutive years in a Modified Monash Model (MM 2–7) area since starting primary school. Eligible applicants receive up to 5 ATAR adjustment points (capped at 99.95).
Equity Entry Pathway — for WA school leavers who qualify for Curtin's StepUp Bonus scheme (based on the school attended or financial hardship), also carrying up to 5 ATAR adjustment points, capped at 99.95.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Entry Pathway — applicants apply directly to Curtin Medical School (no TISC application, UCAT, or CASPer required), starting with a Formal Yarning Session with the Aboriginal Health Team, followed by an MMI for shortlisted candidates. Successful applicants attend a dedicated three-day pre-orientation program in February.
Rural and Equity adjustments can't be combined, if you qualify for both, only one applies, but WA applicants eligible for both rural and equity pathways are considered under both simultaneously.
Selection Process
- Ranking for interview: a weighted combination of ATAR (35%), CASPer score (35%), and UCAT ANZ score (30%).
- The interview: a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI), primarily face-to-face, with limited online options for interstate/overseas applicants. Attendance is mandatory to remain eligible.
- Ranking for an offer: a weighted combination of actual ATAR (40%), UCAT ANZ score (20%), and interview performance (40%).
Interview rounds:
- December round — competitive WA school leavers, Curtin course switchers, and WA non-school leavers (using Predicted ATAR, since actual results aren't out yet).
- Mid-January round — WA applicants whose actual ATAR is competitive and who still have Curtin as first preference.
- Late January round — competitive interstate and overseas applicants, interviewed online.
Curtin explicitly confirms personal statements, references, testimonials, awards, and certificates are not part of the selection process and won't be considered if submitted.
How to Apply (Domestic Applicants)
- Register for and sit the UCAT ANZ.
- Register for and sit the CASPer Test (choose one of the published test dates).
- Apply through TISC (you don't need to specify your entry pathway, Curtin determines this from your qualifications).
- School leavers: ensure Year 11 results are available to TISC so a Predicted ATAR can be generated for the December interview round.
- Rural and Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander applicants: submit the relevant supplementary application form directly to Curtin Medical School by the published deadline.
