James Cook University (JCU), based in Townsville, Queensland, offers a six-year undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), with a strong focus on tropical medicine and clinical experience across rural and remote communities.

Entry Requirements
JCU does not use the UCAT as part of its selection process, and the written application component was removed in 2024. Instead, applicants are assessed on:
- ATAR (or equivalent Year 12 result) or subsequent tertiary academic performance, via QTAC
- Demonstrated personal qualities suited to a medical career, assessed at interview
For Year 12 Applicants
- Completed prerequisite subjects: English (Units 3/4, C), Mathematical Methods (Units 3/4, C), and Chemistry (Units 3/4, C), or an interstate/overseas equivalent
- A Prediction of Academic Achievement form completed by a teacher at your school
- Physics and Biology are highly recommended, though not formal prerequisites
On ATAR: JCU's own published data for the most recent completed intake (semester 1, 2026, Cairns campus) shows a highest accepted rank of 99.95, a median of 97.65, and a lowest accepted rank of 88.00. These figures shift every cycle and differ somewhat between JCU's Townsville and Cairns intakes, always check the current published thresholds for the specific campus you're applying to, rather than relying on a past year's figures.
Only a limited number of places are available to non-Year 12 applicants.
For Non-Year 12 Applicants
- Most recent GPA from current or completed tertiary study is used for ranking. A GPA of around 5.75 has historically been the threshold to be considered for interview, though this figure is reviewed and can change, confirm the current threshold directly with JCU.
- Applicants with an existing undergraduate health science degree may be considered for entry beyond first year, depending on when the degree was completed and academic performance within it.
Only qualifications that generate a GPA score are considered; non-GPA-generating study won't be used to rank applicants for interview.
How to Apply
- Apply directly to JCU (via the JCU Online Application portal) and apply through QTAC.
- Submit a Prediction of Academic Achievement form, completed by your school principal, vice-principal, guidance officer, or director of studies, to JCU's Division of Tropical Health and Medicine.
- Selected applicants receive an email interview offer after these documents are assessed.
The Prediction of Academic Achievement form supports an early interview round (late November to early December), ahead of official results being released. A second interview round runs in early January for applicants whose school doesn't provide a PAA form, or whose predicted results differ significantly from their actual results.
Interview Process
JCU's interview assesses communication and teamwork skills, critical thinking, ethical and empathetic reasoning, and understanding of tropical and rural health issues.
Only a limited number of applicants are invited to interview, based on an evaluation of the online application and academic performance. Interview details (location, format, date) are typically emailed roughly two weeks beforehand. Interviews are currently conducted online.
Fees
The estimated annual CSP/BMP tuition contribution is $13,241 (subject to annual review). JCU offers government-subsidised places through the Bonded Medical Program (BMP), available to domestic students entering first year, whether graduate or undergraduate.
International student fees have historically sat well above domestic CSP rates and are reviewed annually, confirm the current figure directly with JCU rather than relying on a previous year's published amount.
