MMI Detech Stations: How to De-Technicalise Complex Concepts

In earlier articles on MMI formats, we've covered how an MMI runs through a series of separate stations, each with its own room, interviewer, and question style. One recurring station type is the "detech" station (short for de-technicalisation), and it shows up across nearly every Australian medical school MMI at some point.

Detech stations are valued because they test a genuinely core clinical skill: explaining complicated jargon to someone without a medical background. That's harder than it sounds. Your goal is to explain a concept clearly enough that a patient can make an informed, autonomous decision about their own care (a core ethical principle), without sounding patronising or oversimplifying to the point of meaninglessness.

This article covers how to approach a detech station, how to prepare for one, and the different forms this station type takes across Australian universities.

What Is an MMI Detech Station?

A detech station asks you to de-technicalise a single word or concept from biomedical science, generally the only task at that station. Within your allotted few minutes, you need to think carefully about phrasing and cover the genuinely relevant information.

You'll usually get to choose your concept. Typically you'll pick one term from a shortlist of three or four, each drawn from a different field (for example, frequency from physics, cell from biology, activation energy from chemistry). This is deliberate: the station is testing your ability to explain, not your depth of understanding, so schools generally avoid forcing you to detech something genuinely unfamiliar.

Once you've picked a concept, identify the key points. Your underlying knowledge isn't directly scored, but your judgment about what's actually worth explaining is. If your term is "cell," dwelling on the phospholipid bilayer misses the point, it's biologically important but irrelevant to a layperson. Focus on whatever aspect of the concept would actually matter to someone making a decision.

Always consider your audience. In practice, your audience is a worried patient or their family. Being patronising, or trying to impress them with your vocabulary, both miss the goal. You're communicating the points that matter for their decision, nothing more. For "cell," saying it's the basic building block of the human body does far more work than mentioning the endoplasmic reticulum.

How to Prepare for a Detech Station

Your best resource here is genuinely your non-medical friends and family. Since the whole point is explaining jargon to a layperson, you need feedback from an actual layperson, not another med student.

A good starting exercise: pick a shortlist of technical terms from your science coursework, and set aside regular time (say, 15 minutes every other evening) to explain them to a parent or friend, then get their feedback. Two specific things are worth asking about afterward:

  • Tone — was the explanation engaging and appropriately professional, or did it come across as dry, condescending, or confusing?
  • Jargon leakage — did any technical terms slip in that they didn't actually understand?

It's also genuinely useful to ask your practice partner to explain the concept back to you in their own words. Any gaps or misunderstandings tend to become obvious immediately, and hearing your own explanation reflected back is one of the fastest ways to spot what needs adjusting.

Beyond this specific method, all the usual MMI preparation strategies apply: practising with a study group, rehearsing in front of a mirror, and, most usefully, recording yourself on camera and reviewing your own performance as an outside observer would.

Worked Example: Detechnicalise "Enzyme"

Step 1: Identify the key points

  • Enzymes exist in the biological world, inside the bodies of plants and animals.
  • Enzymes catalyse reactions.
  • Catalysing a reaction means lowering its activation energy, so the reaction can actually proceed.

Step 2: Know your audience

A layperson with no science background.

Step 3: Draft the explanation

"Enzymes are chemicals found in the natural world, specifically inside plants and animals. Inside our bodies, lots of chemical reactions happen constantly, food gets broken down into energy, or after a workout, your body uses chemical reactions to build muscle. But these reactions can't happen on their own. They need enzymes to help them along.

Think of it like lighting a fire. Fires don't light themselves, you need a spark to get them going. That extra "kick" needed to start the fire is what we'd call activation energy. Chemical reactions in your body work the same way, they need an initial energy kick to get started.

If you tried to light wet wood, it'd be much harder, you'd need a lot more sparks to get it burning. Sometimes reactions in the body need more activation energy than usual too. That's where enzymes come in: an enzyme is a chemical that lowers how much activation energy a reaction needs. It's a bit like something that dries the wood out first, so you need fewer sparks to get it going.

In the body, enzymes help chemical reactions happen more easily, whether that's turning your dinner into usable energy, or helping your body build muscle after a workout."

A Special Case: ANU Medical School

Some universities put a distinctive spin on the detech format. ANU, in Canberra, is known for a somewhat unorthodox approach to its admissions interview, with a strong emphasis on testing communication skills directly. This has historically included detech-equivalent stations built around non-medical tasks, for example:

  • Learning a novel game. Candidates read a set of instructions, then explain the game to their assessor and attempt to play a round based on their own understanding of the rules.
  • Learning a paper-folding technique. Candidates follow written instructions to fold a piece of paper, then explain the process to their assessor and guide them through replicating it.

These exercises test the same underlying skill as a standard detech station: a "specialist" (you) needs to communicate technical instructions clearly to a "layperson" (your assessor). The specific format may be unpredictable and can vary by university and by year, but the underlying approach to preparing for it stays the same.
